Jazz Against The Machine’s Version of „Creep“ by Radiohead
my bass melody and solo that I played on that recording (Transkriptions-Video)
I’ve been asked several times about this track that I recorded with the band Jazz Against The Machine: we do an instrumental version of „Creep“ from Radiohead and it’s pretty much a bass feature ballad. So I made this full transcription of my bass part with all the melodies and improvisations. It’s here in the attachments, I hope You like it.
We made the recording 10 years ago. It was summer, the studio was boiling… I do remember, that we had a good vibe on this one – but still, I now hear inaccuracies and fret noises and stuff that I would like to do better now. And I would probably also not go for the Music Man StingRay as the instrument for this bass ballad. But it’s interesting: this striving for perfection all does not matter so much: obviously, lots of listeners like this one just as it is and are being touched by the vibe of that moment, and that’s what really matters. So I went back to that „old stuff“ of mine, practiced it again, wrote made this transcription video.

Slap-Rudiments und Doubletime-Slap
Transkribtions-Video meines Solos von „Zoohead“ vom Album „The Philbum“.
The Meters: Gossip – James Brown: Funky Drummer – The Meters: A Message From The Meters – Parliament: Dr. Funkstein’s SupergroovalisticProsifunksticationMedley – T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo de Cotonou: Agnon Depke – D’Angelo: Chicken Grease – Sly & The Family Stone: If You Want Me To Stay – Lee Dorsey: Night People – Steely Dan: Josie – James Brown: Make It Funky – Average White Band: Your Love Is A Miracle – The Meters: Cissy Strut – Jimmy Smith: Root Down – The Isley Brothers: It’s Your Thing – Average White Band: Love Your Life – Richard ‚Groove‘ Holmes: Groovin’ with Mr. G.
QUINTOLEN BEATS

Slap-Rudiments and Doubletime-Slap
Transcription video of my solo on „Zoohead“ of my album „The Philbum“. Front-View and sheets below.
Slapping includes various elements such as thumb, pluck, deadnotes, hammer-ons, upstrokes etc. It’s like the different drums of a drum set. From these different „slap instruments“ one can then assemble different basic figures (rudiments), e.g. Slap-Hammer-Slap-Pluck or Slap-Hammer-Pluck. And from various rudiments, you can then form riffs, motives and whole solos. The approach of seeing the whole thing as a rudiment means that you practice various basic movement combinations until they are smooth, tight and with a good flow. Bass-Solo on a 7/16-Funk-Beat
Transcription -video of my solo on the septublet beat of „Septivity“ on my album „The Philbum“. Splitscreen: Top-View and bass sheet underneath.
Groove and natural flow in any time signature – that’s one of my most favorite topics in music. To get the audience into a great natural flow, no matter if it’s a normal 4/4 or an “odd meter“ like a quintuplet beat or, as in this case, a 7/16. You can create great new feels and beats by using other time signatures. The solo here is from the song „Septivity“ from my album „The Philbum“. It includes slap improvisations and tapping lines over this septuple beat. You can see the Tranksription in the lower part of the video. You can order the bass transcription as PDF – if you want to get scores for the whole band (including sheets for drums, percussion, keyboards and guitar), just write me at the contact form below.

16 FAMOUS FUNK BASSLINES
Video with 16 famous funk basslines. Splitscreen with three camera perspectives.
Funk was one of the reasons for me to start playing bass: positive songs, fat grooves and great bass riffs as the basis. I really love the style of the riffs and that old-school funk sound between the late ’60s and mid‘ 70s really. For the video I have packed some of my favorites into one track. There are not nearly all bassline that should be mentioned – it’s a personal choice. I wanted to introduce non-slapping funk riffs here, in a the musically cool order and I wanted to have different funk styles in there: from James Brown, through Meters to Parliament and Afro-Funk. Below the video you will find the track list.
QUINTUPLET BEATS
Transcription-video if my quintuplet-Solo on „Gravizapa“. Splitscreen: front-fiew and sheets underneath.
I love Quintuplet beats, and they are coming more and more in fashion. What I like about quintuple beats is that they actually run like a normal 4/4 – only now each split in 5 subdivisions. That means you feel the 4/4, but the subdivision is now new and opens up completely new possibilities Here in the solo transcription of „Gravizapa“ from my album, it’s all about tapping and slap figures. It is quoted as 5/8, so that not too many auxiliary lines arise. So that means, a felt 4/4 time now gives four 5/8-bars. You can order the bass transcription as PDF – if you want to get scores for the whole band (including sheets for drums, percussion, keyboards and guitar), just write me at the contact form below.
